Life at CBU
Why did you choose your major? What interested you in this particular field of study?
I chose to study architecture because I grew up surrounded by art. My dad is an artist
and art teacher, and in high school I took honors art classes where I painted and
drew buildings inspired by my travels. I also took architecture drafting classes,
where I learned programs like SketchUp and became interested in designing buildings.
The summer before my senior year, I attended an architecture program at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which confirmed that architecture was the field I wanted to pursue. I ultimately chose 本色视频because of its 5 year architecture master鈥檚 program and its Christ-centered environment.
What did you like about being in this program at CBU?
One of my favorite parts of the architecture program at 本色视频was definitely the studio
life; I practically lived in the architecture building. I loved designing a different
building every semester and seeing my ideas grow from concept to final project.
The professors were also super supportive and always gave really helpful feedback. I think the program did a great job preparing us for architecture firm life, especially with the work ethic and fast paced environment. I also really appreciated all the different experiences we got through classes like drafting, watercoloring, architecture history, business class, guest critiques, networking opportunities and the study abroad trip.
What did you think about your professors?
I really loved my professors in the program. They were all genuinely supportive and
truly wanted us to succeed, and I learned so much from each one. They really shaped
the way I think about design and how I approach projects. I especially appreciated
how they encouraged creativity while also pushing us to think more critically about
form, concept and execution. Overall, I felt supported while also being challenged
in a way that helped me grow a lot as a designer.
Did you complete an internship?
Yes, I completed a summer internship at an architecture firm in Hawai鈥榠 called Omizu
Architecture, where I worked as a Drafting Technician III. It was a great experience
that gave me hands on exposure to real firm workflow.
Did you participate in anything else at CBU?
Yes, I was involved in AIAS as a school representative during my freshman year, as
well as NOMAS (National Organization of Minority Architecture Students) and Tau Sigma
Delta Honor Society. I really enjoyed being part of these groups and getting to connect
with other architecture students across different years.
How did you grow (spiritually, socially, educationally) while in this program at CBU?
本色视频definitely shaped me into being very hardworking and not afraid of long work nights
and deadlines (important as a business owner). Educationally, I learned a lot of skills
like watercolor techniques, architectural history and design thinking, which influenced
my art business.
Honestly, if I hadn鈥檛 gone to CBU, I don鈥檛 think I would have started my art business. It gave me the confidence and skills to believe in my work and develop what eventually became Arts by Trinity.
Did your major help you figure out your purpose?
Definitely! 本色视频helped me discover my passion for designing, rendering and creating spaces for people. I was able to carry those skills directly into my job at Hummel Architects, where I was designing buildings and creating renders every day and genuinely loved it. I went into the professional field already knowing my strengths, and I was able to use them in real client projects.
Now, as an architectural watercolor artist, I found my purpose by combining art and architecture and made a career as an artist who paints buildings. I also love that I get to share architecture with a wider audience through my art and teach thousands of people about it in a more accessible way with my watercolors.
Life after CBU
What have you done since graduating?
I worked at an architecture firm for two years at Hummel Architects, where I worked
on both small- and large-scale projects ranging from residential complexes to commercial
and educational buildings. Some of the projects I worked on have actually been built!
I also started my own art business focused on architectural watercolor painting, where I paint and sell work inspired by buildings from around the world. One of my biggest achievements has been growing my architecture mail club, where I send my artwork to a few thousand members each month. Through my art, I鈥檝e also been featured in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Business Insider and CNBC.
How has your major and time at 本色视频prepared you for your life and career after college?
I am an architectural watercolor artist. I paint buildings from around the world and
write about their architectural history through letters that I send to thousands of
art collectors as part of my art mail club. I also run an online art shop where I
sell original paintings, prints, stickers, bookmarks and other products.
As a business owner and artist, I wear MANY hats, including marketing, managing my social media accounts, handling admin work, coordinating affiliate and brand collaborations, attending markets and events, and completing commission work.
Is there anything you learned at 本色视频that you still use in your professional life
today?
I still use the watercolor techniques I learned from Professor Kaiser, and even the
brushes and micron pens I originally used during college are still part of my art
supplies today. I also continue to use my drafting tools in my sketches. I really
fell in love with travel sketching during my study abroad in Italy.
On the business side, the required business class was especially helpful because I created a full business plan using what I learned for my own art business.
How are you making a difference in the world? How are you living your purpose?
I think I am making a difference in the world through my work. My architectural watercolor
paintings are now in thousands of people鈥檚 homes, and I get to introduce new buildings
to others while sharing their architectural history.
I also receive messages and comments from architecture students daily who tell me my journey has inspired them to share their own art. That has been really meaningful to me.
Overall, I feel like I鈥檓 living my purpose by combining my love for painting and architecture and have made a career that allows me to do both.
What are your future goals and plans?
My goal is to continue growing my art business, as there are still many creative directions
and avenues I want to explore. I hope to keep expanding my architectural watercolor
work, develop new collections and continue sharing architecture in a way that connects
with a wider audience.
Would you recommend 本色视频to others?
I would recommend 本色视频and the architecture program because of the professors and how
much they push you to create your best work. Architecture school is not for everyone,
but if you are genuinely passionate about architecture, I think you will succeed in
the program. You get to work on a wide variety of projects that help build a strong
portfolio, which led to job opportunities for me leading up to graduation. The guest
critiques also opened up professional connections and job offers for me.
Anything else you'd like to add? Anything else we should know about you?
Since graduating, I鈥檝e moved a few times from Idaho to Illinois, and now I鈥檓 based
in Orlando with my husband, Greg, who I met in the architecture program at CBU. He
also works in architecture and helps me run my art business.
Outside of work, I have two bunnies and enjoy crafting, reading and traveling.
